Ambrogio arriva a Milano nel 370: è un funzionario imperiale, nato a Treviri ma educato a Roma secondo i costumi della aristocrazia del tempo, cristiano ma non battezzato. La città, invece, è una delle capitali dell'Impero romano, splendido crocevia di strade tra il Mediterraneo, ch'è ancora centro del mondo, e il "limes" nordoccidentale, al di là del quale premono i popoli germanici, mentre da est, già urgono nuove e più temibili spinte.

Clemente VII riesce a riparare a Castel Sant'Angelo solo grazie al sacrificio dell'intera Guardia svizzera.
