Europe Great Power

History tells us that the Second World War broke Britain as a great power, diminishing its military strength, ruining its economy, and precipitating a striking wave of decolonization. Nationalists and new superpowers dominated the post-war landscape, and the country was on the slide. But no one knew this in 1945—the leading politicians, the top civil servants, and the most knowledgeable experts, all expected the British Empire to remain intact long into the future.

England has more often been faced with the claims of competing kings and queens than with a period of no monarch at all. Following the disastrous reign of Charles I and the civil wars that led to his execution, Parliament and the army ruled England. The collapse of the Carolingian Empire of Charles the Great led to a breakdown in central authority and an extended era of political fragmentation. But the sentiment and gratitude Churchill expressed back in 1940 is very much alive today. The sacrifice made by “The Few”, the British and Allied fighter pilots who won the Battle of Britain in 1940, remains close to the hearts of the British public.
