The following essays are thought to be representative rather than historically developmental, that is to say, each one of the theorists discussed in these ten essays represents a particularly cogent development within their field of study -- sociology, anthropology, psychology -- and, therefore, are given pride of place in our discussion of the history and philosophy of the social sciences. The Reveries of the Solitary Walker was one of the last works written by the French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) and was, in fact, not quite complete.
