Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. With the same deadpan mania and genius for dislocation that he brought to his internationally acclaimed novels A Wild Sheep Chase and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, Haruki Murakami makes this collection of stories a determined assault on the normal. A man sees his favorite elephant vanish into thin air; a newlywed couple suffers attacks of hunger that drive them to hold up a McDonald's in the middle of the night; and a young woman discovers that she has become irresistible to a little green monster who burrows up through her backyard.

Your child joins Ellen the Elephant on a journey through a magical forest that leads to sleep. Along the way, they meet different fantastical characters and have calming experiences that will help your child relax and slip into slumber quickly. The story works perfectly for either naptime or bedtime.

It's homework time for the little red chicken, who has just learned about something every good story should have: an elephant of surprise.
