Eastern Philosophy

The Analects or Selected Sayings is an ancient Chinese text comprising sayings and wisdom teachings attributed to Confucius and his contemporaries, as well as fragmentary dialogues between the philosopher and his students. The Analects has been one of the most influential books in China for the last two millennia, and continues to contribute to Chinese and East Asian culture and thought.

What’s Your Aspiration? is about the Dharma path identified by Shinran (1173-1263), a teacher of Japan’s Kamakura period. He would have us ask: “Can I know whether my spiritual aspiration is true-and-real? Have I realized the right starting point?” If I have not, then the subsequent steps will all be misdirected. If, however, the aspiration is true-and-real, then, according to Shinran, everything else follows necessarily. Such an aspiration contains all that is needed as far as practice and attainment.

Bhakti (love for the Beloved) is the highest pinnacle of any spiritual endeavor. Unlike other paths, it is a wholly selfless path in which the practitioner is unconcerned with personal gain or spiritual goals. The goal is simply to love God. In this path, one experiences the bliss of the divine from the very outset. As Ramakrishna says, God’s devotees are invited into the living room of God’s heart from the very beginning, while others have to wait outside until the very end. Bhakti is the simplest, easiest, most satisfying and most expedient path to the divine.
