Despite the fact that Australia was a large landmass, no nation believed it was worth colonizing. The land was claimed by the Netherlands. However, little exploration happened there. Many countries actually believed it to be uninhabitable. However, the Aboriginal populations had already been thriving on the land for millennia.

Between 1942 and 1945, a group of ordinary citizens formed a network to smuggle Dutch Jews and others targeted by the Nazis south into France, via Paris, and then to Switzerland. This network became known as the Dutch-Paris Escape Line, eventually growing to include 300 people and expanding its reach into Spain. Led by Jean Weidner, a Dutchman living in France, many lacked any experience in clandestine operations or military tactics, and yet they became one of the most effective resistance groups of the Second World War.

In 1616, an English adventurer, Nathaniel Courthope, stepped ashore on a remote island in the East Indies on a secret mission: to persuade the islanders of Run to grant a monopoly to England over their nutmeg, a fabulously valuable spice in Europe. This infuriated the Dutch, who were determined to control the world's nutmeg supply.

During the 17th century, the Netherlands, despite having only 1.5 million people in 1600, became a global maritime and trading power. By contrast, France at the time had 20 million people, Spain had eight million, and England had five million. Nevertheless, Amsterdam became one of the most important urban centers in the world and the location of the world’s first stock market, and Dutch merchant ships and pirates plied the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean.

De Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (1602-1799) was de allereerste multinational ter wereld en één van de meest succesvolle handelsbedrijven ooit. De vloot van de V. O. C. groeide uit tot meer dan 1700 schepen. Scheepsladingen vol specerijen, zijde, thee en porselein bereikten Nederland vanuit Azië. Door deze bloeiende handel ontstond in de Nederlanden een periode van ongekende welvaart, de zogenaamde Gouden Eeuw.

De Nederlandse identiteit bestaat volgens sommige mensen niet. Maar Nederland kent wel degelijk collectieve eigenaardigheden die lange tradities hebben en niet zomaar uit de lucht zijn komen vallen. De afkeer van nationalisme en volkshelden, het botte en directe optreden, het gelijkwaardigheidsdenken, de Oranje- en carnavalsgekte, het zuinige en het polderen zijn maar enkele voorbeelden.

Established around the beginning of the 17th century, this nautical behemoth of a corporation was determined to squeeze everyone else out of the market. Het was een overblijfsel van de tijd waarin New York nog Nieuw-Amsterdam heette en je zonder het Nederlands nergens kwam aan de oostkust van Amerika. In De Tawl gaat historicus Philip Dröge al fietsend over Amerikaanse wegen op zoek naar wat er nu nog over is van dat Nederlandstalige verleden. Het resultaat is een opmerkelijk verhaal over de Nederlandse oorsprong van woorden als 'OK' en 'dope' en over gekke rechters, slavernij, komieken en oplichters.
