Home Is Us tells the story of my mother’s struggle to protect herself, and her daughters from harm. Our story moves from the shared trauma of violence, through our fight for education, safety, and independence. My family’s songs, prayers, and spoken word have given me a greater awareness of myself, how we survived, and continue to thrive. Shared here now, for you to listen.

If someone in your life is causing you to question your own sanity and is driving you into the ground, don’t worry, you are not crazy, nor are you alone in the matter. Most importantly, it is not your fault! Did you know that according to National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence survey, 48.4 percent of women and 48.8 percent of men have experienced at least one psychologically aggressive behavior by an intimate partner. That’s nearly every other person!

Our main goal in this book is to assist you in becoming more aware of when someone is controlling, manipulating, harassing, bullying, stalking or threatening you, and empower you to respond in ways that will protect you. Controlling, manipulative, and/or threatening behaviors often turn into turn violence. If you find yourself in a situation with any of these types of people, you will learn how to manage them and yourself.

Kristopher was the type of man any woman hoped to fall in love with. Intelligent, charming, and worldly—everyone loved him. Yet, his definition of love was a far cry from the idealistic vision he painted. Behind closed doors, his behavior was erratic—from loving and kind to distant and cruel. Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which the abuser attempts to diffuse confusion and self-doubt in their victim’s mind. By distorting reality and forcing the victim to question their own judgment, gaslighters are typically seeking to gain control and power over the other person. The whole purpose of gaslighting is to convince you that you are unable to trust your instincts, or even your thoughts, and therefore, cause you to question your entire reality.

Looking back, it was amazing how my brain processed the whole incident.
