Holmes receives a letter from a Nathan Garrideb asking for help. He is looking for another man with his unusual surname, for it will mean an inheritance for him. He has been approached by another man, John Garrideb who says that he needs to find others with the same last name. Why does Holmes' investigation lead to a tragic shooting?

The Problem of Cell 13 is a short story by Jacques Futrelle. It was first published in 1905 and later collected in The Thinking Machine (1907), which was featured in crime writer H. R. F. Keating's list of the 100 best crime and mystery books ever published. Like Futrelle's other short stories, The Problem of Cell 13 features Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen as the main character, although most of the story is seen through the perspective of a prison warden.

Dr. Watson faints for the first and last time of his life when the believed-to-be-dead Holmes appears in the middle of an investigation of a crime. We find out about what really happened in the fight to the death with the evil Moriarty.
