Dark Comedy Horror Fiction

"Ibid" is a parody by American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft. Ibid is a mock biography of the Roman scholar Ibidus (486-587), whose masterpiece was Op. Cit., "wherein all the significant undercurrents of Graeco-Roman thought were crystallized once and for all." The piece traces the skull of Ibidus, once the possession of Charlemagne, William the Conqueror and other notables, to the United States, where it travels via Salem, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island to a prairie dog hole in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The Storeroom Guys is a darkly comic listen for a foggy winter's night. It is a great piece of literature to get a conversation started about strange work colleagues, haunted spaces, post-traumatic stress, and surviving tough times. It has inspired graphic artists, theatre producers, and screen writers. For horror fans, there are lots of clever references to classics of the genre, but there is nothing jaded about the plot, and the twist is as satisfying as it is unexpected. The Guys has contemporary characters - but evil is timeless.

Walsall, once named the fattest town in UK, has a major sewerage problem. Like the arteries of many of its inhabitants, the main sewer is fast becoming blocked. Just imagine you walk into a cheesy old greasy-spoon diner, the kind that ought to hand out antacid along with a napkin, knife, and fork. You ask the waitress for eggs and bacon, and she brings you a plate with live chicken on it. I mean, feathers and beak and the whole bonanza. Just think about a mix of Kafka and O'Henry and you are somewhere close to the mark.

Steven is a writer, by all accounts of self-proclamation. But no artist can be expected to work under serious pressure, especially not when the pressure consists of his own mother indenting his tender skull with the muzzle of the pistol held in her hand. Suddenly, it's write or die for Steven. He better tap away on that typewriter or expect to be extracted from the land of the living before he's had the opportunity to finish anything he's ever written. Not to mention that his recently departed father lying on the floor beside him should supply enough motivation.

Brightness Falls isn't just the name of the TV show that womanizing man-child Andrew Ware has been painstakingly creating for the last couple years, it's also his hometown. A town that he loves as much as he hates. By request of no one, Andrew returns home to help his sister separate from her husband, only to become sidetracked by a beautiful woman. A few drinks and few compliments later the woman is dead, killed in a tragic oral sex accident. In which Andrew would have lost his own life if it weren’t for the dapperly dressed, antler-headed, human skeleton named Doug.

Eigentlich haben wir nur eine Person gesucht und am Ende drei gefunden. Doch wie soll es jetzt weitergehen? Diese neue Welt ist nicht für jeden gemacht und manche brauchen mehr Schutz als andere.

Wer hätte zu Beginn der Apokalypse damit rechnen können? Zugegeben, ich bin wahnsinnig neugierig auf sie. Doch zuerst muss die Rettung gelingen. Danach heißt es nichts wie weg von hier. Werden wir je wieder in Sicherheit sein?

Haben uns wirklich Zombies gerettet? Abgesehen davon warten noch viele weitere Überraschungen auf mich. Unsere Retter sind nicht irgendjemand, sondern... das sage ich jetzt natürlich nicht! Dazu kommen noch schwierige Entscheidungen, ein paar Todesfälle und ein DVD Abend. Die alltägliche Apokalypse eben.

Weihnachten und unter dem Tannenbaum liegen... nein, ich sage es besser nicht. So schlimm ist es auch gar nicht. Aber klar, so habe ich es mir definitiv niemals vorgestellt: in einem fremden Haus und mit eigentlich mit fremden Leuten, wovon sogar ein paar Zombies sind. Klingt wie aus einem richtig schrägen Film. Zusätzlich wird mein ganzes Weltbild auf den Kopf gestellt. Zombies sind wirklich nicht gleich Zombies. Nicht einmal die, von denen ich es dachte.
