Crusades History

In terms of geopolitics, perhaps the most seminal event of the Middle Ages was the successful Ottoman siege of Constantinople in 1453. The city had been an imperial capital as far back as the 4th century, when Constantine the Great shifted the power center of the Roman Empire there, effectively establishing two almost equally powerful halves of antiquity’s greatest empire. Constantinople would continue to serve as the capital of the Byzantine Empire even after the Western half of the Roman Empire collapsed in the late 5th century.

Traditionalism is the shadowy philosophy that has influenced so much of the twentieth century and beyond: from the far right to the environmental movement, from Alexander Dugin to Prince Charles. It is a new way of seeing the world: one that rejects modernity and instead turns to sacred truth, perennialism and tradition as its guide.

Given the personalities involved, the Third Crusade is among the most famous of the Crusades, and the Battle of Jaffa occurred on August 8, 1192 on the site of an ancient port that is now the oldest part of the city of Tel-Aviv, Israel. It was the encounter that brought the Third Crusade to a conclusion, and though it is not one of the better-known battles of the Crusades and certainly not the most spectacular in terms of battle numbers, it helped shape how the Middle East would look going forward.

In name of the church, or other religions, like the Muslim faith, people killed, destroyed, looted, and burned cities to the ground. The order was also significant for consolidating the power of the Holy Roman Empire in Eastern Europe.

The crusading movement was launched by Pope Urban II, in 1095 in a speech before a great concourse of 250 bishops, 400 abbots, many feudal lords and knights, and a multitude of the people at a council at Clermont-Farrand in south central France. Many crusades followed the first. Edessa, Antioch, and the County of Tripoli were established, but all became part of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, which extended its frontier south to the Red Sea. The European presence was not to last, however, and was ended by the Kurdish warrior Saladin.
