Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. We are nation of laws, civil and criminal. In this work, I focus on criminal law. I offer up theories and examples to help us regain our bearings on crime, because quite frankly, we have lost sight of why we even have laws. We get bogged down by tradition and misguided morals, and we think these somehow justify our misapplications of law. It is time to regain our senses.
