Leo Tolstoy (1828 - 1910) was a Russian writer who is regarded as among the greatest authors of all time. Translated by R S Townsend and published in 1916, the seven stories in Tolstoy for the Young have been adapted for children, to serve as the perfect introduction to the great writer for young listeners.

Uncle Remus is a freedman who serves as a storytelling device, passing on the folktales like the traditional African griot to children gathered around him. While most farmers are well-mannered and espouse great virtues and integrity this story proves there exists at least one farmer who is a profound scoundrel. It's not often a farmer can start with a wooden calf and end up the richest farmer in the land. The moral may well be never to follow this fellow's example.

The Velveteen Rabbit is the classic tale of a beloved stuffed rabbit who, while once fluffy and huggable, has become worn out and threadbare after years of being loved. He is saved after being discarded and taken to Rabbitland, where he becomes “Real” and is cherished for the rest of time.
