Nel 1850 Charles Dickens firma ben tre articoli riguardanti la vita e il lavoro del detective (figura nuovissima, a quei tempi, risalendo la creazione del Detective Branch di Londra a solamente otto anni prima). Accantonando per un momento Londra, coi suoi sobborghi malfamati e i suoi detective ligi alla giustizia, Dickens ci trasporta nella Napoli di metà Ottocento, al crepuscolo del regime borbonico. Qui, con esplicita riprovazione dello stesso autore, vige un controllo spietato sulla popolazione da parte della temibile polizia segreta.

Wainewright - il cui spirito da dandy verrà descritto anche da altri grandi scrittori, come Oscar Wilde - è il protagonista di un caso giudiziario eclatante, consumatosi negli anni '30 dell'Ottocento.
