Accantonando per un momento Londra, coi suoi sobborghi malfamati e i suoi detective ligi alla giustizia, Dickens ci trasporta nella Napoli di metà Ottocento, al crepuscolo del regime borbonico. Qui, con esplicita riprovazione dello stesso autore, vige un controllo spietato sulla popolazione da parte della temibile polizia segreta.
