The anonymous narrator is suffering from a strange hypersensitivity to everything around him. He lives with an old man who has a clouded bluish eye, an abnormality that fascinates and disturbs him. Resolving to kill the man and dispose of his body, he soon realizes in horror, however, his innocent victim may never let him forget what he has done.

He turned his head forward again and led us through the kitchen, past several side pantries. As we cautiously inched forward, Holmes observed that the blood trail consisted of droplets of varying size. First published in an 1839 edition of Burton's Gentleman's Magazine, "The Fall of the House of Usher" is the story of the declining physical and psychological health of the residents of the House of Usher - and the way in which the house itself reflects that.
