Welcome to the wonderful warming humor and equally warming wisdom of these nine essay-like tales, all illustrating the old adage of "Where there's a will, the is a way!" Extract: "The boys of Mr. Fountain's school were delighted when he told them he should take them that evening to a lecture in the town; not that they cared a fig for the lecture, but it was a chance to get out, and in place of the quiet study-room there would be the jolly walk by moonlight down the frozen hillside, with slides and snowballing instead of books.

Dante Alighieri ist bis heute weithin bekannt als der Autor der "Göttlichen Komödie", eines der größten und einflussreichsten Werke der Literatur. Weitaus weniger bekannt sind die Werke, die er zuvor verfasst hatte. Eines davon ist "Das Neue Leben", verfasst zwischen 1292 und 1295. Vieles an diesem Werk ist außergewöhnlich. So schrieb Dante es nicht in Latein, damals der Sprache der Wissenschaft, sondern in seinem toskanischen Dialekt, dem heutigen Italienisch. Bemerkenswert ist auch die Form, in der er schrieb.

"Es gibt nichts Langweiligeres auf dieser Erde als die Lektüre einer italienischen Reisebeschreibung", warnt Heinrich Heine und verspricht, sie dadurch "einigermaßen erträglich zu machen, dass er von Italien selbst so wenig als möglich darin redet". So sind "Die Bäder von Lucca" eher bissige Anekdoten über die geistigen und politischen Zustände im Deutschland des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts. Obwohl Heine in der Restaurationszeit verboten wurde, waren seine Reisebilder und Gedichte so erfolgreich, dass er als freier Schriftsteller im Pariser Exil leben konnte.

Rolf Boysen liest Heinrich von Kleist. In seinem Essay "Über die allmähliche Verfertigung der Gedanken beim Reden" gibt Kleist den Rat, Probleme durch das "Darüber reden" mit anderen Menschen zu lösen. Allein schon das Formulieren bringt uns einer Lösung näher, denn "die Idee kommt beim Sprechen". In der Novelle "Das Erdbeben in Chili" droht den Liebenden Jeronimo und Josephe die Hinrichtung, als ein Erdbeben ihnen unverhofft zur Freiheit verhilft.

Bei dieser Lesung handelt es sich um die Antrittsvorlesung von Friedrich Schiller in Jena am 26.05.1789. Der Begriff "Universalgeschichte" ist die Übersetzung von dem englischen Wort "Universalhistory", das im damaligen Deutschland eine Diskussion bei Historikern, Philosophen und Theologen ausgelöst hatte. Friedrich Schiller nimmt es als Ausgangspunkt und Thema seiner Vorlesung und zieht seine eigenen Schlüsse.
