A spate of pornographic polaroids and a violent accident bookend Josephine's last year at St John the Divine, an elite all-girls English boarding school. Rossano is one of the most important cities of Calabria, under Byzantine rule, and here one of the most significant monuments of that time has been preserved: the Oratorio di San Marco, founded between the tenth and the eleventh century. During the restoration, fragments of admirable sculptures and frescoes of the Byzantine period emerged: a Virgin Mary with Child, which was to be part of a much wider representation.

Stealing a suitcase of letters, clothes and photographs from her mum's bedroom at the top of a hotel on Venice Beach, the girl spends her summer travelling around Los Angeles, returning love letters and photographs to the men who had known her mother.
