China and the US are in a pitched battle to control the way the world functions - from the global trade and investment regime and choice of reserve currency to its top products and which country is the most influential. Governments, businesses, and individuals are being forced to make a choice: lean in the direction of the eagle and pursue a free, democratic, and market-oriented economic and political system, or lean in the direction of the panda, toward that of an authoritarian form of government and state-dominated economic system.

Landing in Vancouver on a flight from Hong Kong on December 2018, Chinese telecom executive Meng Wanzhou was arrested by Canadian authorities with an American extradition warrant. The US Department of Justice accused Meng of fraud and bypassing sanctions against Iran. Nine days later, in an act of retaliation, China arrested two Canadians—Michael Spavor, an entrepreneur, and Michael Kovrig, a peace advocate—charging them with spying.

Throughout the post-Mao reform era, China has championed the principle of sovereign state control, which holds that states should not intervene in the affairs of other states. Fear swept Zhenjiang as British soldiers gathered outside the city walls in the summer of 1842. Not since the modern liberal order was born in the 1940s has the world had to grapple with the possibility of its demise, at the hand of a rising China. Lange galt China als eine Art sanfter, schlafender Riese. Zwar war das politische System und dessen Menschenrechtsverletzungen nur schwer vereinbar mit westlichen demokratischen Werten, doch man setzte auf das Prinzip »Wandel durch Handel«. China würde sich mit steigendem Wohlstand schon öffnen. Doch das Gegenteil ist eingetreten: China verschließt sich nach außen, hat aber enorm an wirtschaftlichen und politischen Einfluss gewonnen. Bereits seit 2013 schafft die kommunistische Partei mit Krediten, Investitionen und Entwicklungsprojekten neue Absatzmärkte und hat neue Seidenstraßen erschlossen.
