Normally when you meet 'the one' you're sitting across from each other at a table in a fancy restaurant, eating a delicious and usually expensive meal. You don't expect to meet the love of your life while escaping from an experimental institution. Unless you're Leven and Eyrx, that is. Finding someone who works as well as you do really just makes your heart thump. What makes this even better? Leven being a vampire and Eyrx being a werewolf. Forbidden love? Check. Total insanity? Check. Revenge to be had? Check.

"The Cats of Ulthar" is a short story written by American fantasy author H. P. Lovecraft in June 1920. In the tale, an unnamed narrator relates the story of how a law forbidding the killing of cats came to be in a town called Ulthar. As the narrative goes, the city is home to an old couple who enjoy capturing and killing the townspeople's cats. When a caravan of wanderers passes through the city, the kitten of an orphan (Menes) traveling with the band disappears.

The only thing in the way of Kurt Reedy taking over the whole lake for his development project is Chuck Miller. He’s used every trick in the book, but the man won’t sell his family’s legacy. Running out of time, Reedy is forced to think outside the box to get results.

The narrator boasts of his well-known kindness and compassion towards animals, which was mirrored by his wife. His favorite pet of theirs was a large black cat named Pluto. As the years passed, the narrator became more besotted by drink and consumed by his own cruelty and perverseness. He abused his wife and the animals. Pluto, who was his favorite, bore the brunt of his rage. One day, the narrator cut out one of the cat’s eyes, and not long after that, he hanged the cat from the branch of his tree.

A stranger alone in Paris finds himself thrown by a terrible storm into the evil underbelly of the city, where he comes face-to-face with a ghost. He can only escape by befriending his enemies.

As with most stories by Poe, there are far deeper meanings as the narrator takes us through his madness. Pluto his cat becomes a symbol of what is wrong in his, the narrator's, life. He tortures Pluto in a drunken stupor by cutting out his eye. He feels guilt for hurting a creature he once loved that also once loved him. The narrator continues to spiral into his web of self-destruction until he is penning his story the night before he will meet the same fate he imposed upon Pluto.
