Der gik nogle år, efter kong Frederik den Syvende og Siams kong Mongkut underskrev en traktat om nærmere handelsfælleskab og venskab mellem de to fjerntliggende lande, før Mongkuts søn, den ambitiøse og fremadsynede kong Chulalangkorn, i 1868 for alvor satte gang i samarbejdet mellem de to lande.
