Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (Albi, 1864-Malromé, 1901) nació en el seno de una de las familias aristócratas más importantes de Francia. Su familia se instaló en París en 1873. En 1878 sufrió la rotura de su fémur izquierdo, al año siguiente la del derecho, razón por la que sus piernas sufrieron un desarrollo anormal a causa de una enfermedad congénita que le provocaba falta de calcio; conservó un torso normal, pero las piernas no le crecieron.
