Ya anticipábamos en la tema 24, dedicada al arte isabelino y plateresco, lo convencional de tla duración de un periodo artístico. A esa convencional división cronológica se le añade la necesidad de reducir a dos temas la arquitectura renacentista española. Ante tamaña dificultad, hemos huido de los caminos habituales, buscando la mejor realización práctica de los temas. De este modo, podemos asegurar una visión completa de la arquitectura renacentista a través de las series 24 y de esta.

Nos encontramos ante un producto artístico plena­mente oriental. El problema de que los árabes no fueran creadores de formas artísticas propias no resta mérito alguno a su labor. Las soluciones arquitectónicas por ellos adoptadas habían sido empleadas por persas y bizantinos desde muchos siglos atrás, pero lo cierto es que sólo los árabes lograron hacer de este arte un arte universal.

Tras la muerte de Almanzor (1002), los reinos leonés y navarro, a los que pronto se va a unir el castellano, se aprovechan de la mala situación política y militar en que navegaba el califato y avanzan impetuosamente hacia el sur. Es la época de Sancho el Mayor, de Fernando I, de Alfonso VI, reyes que favorecieron ampliamente la entrada de las corrientes culturales francas en sus reinos.

El hierro, el cemento y el vidrio revolucionan la construcción del siglo XX que dan lugar a dos grandes estilos: el racionalismo y la arquitectura orgánica, cuyos representantes más destacados fueron sin duda Le Corbusier y Lloyd Wright, entre otros muchos autores que transforman definitivamente la construcción arquitectónica. Los rascacielos ponen la nota imperativa del nuevo siglo y se extienden por todo el mundo.

Como resultado del desarrollo técnico de los distintos estilos de la Alta Edad Media, hacia el siglo XI aparece un nuevo estilo arquitectónico que va a imponerse definitivamente durante siglos y va a dejar una huella imborrable en la historia de la cultura europea. La arquitectura románica es la mejor muestra del esfuerzo germánico por encontrar un estilo semejante al de los antiguos más desarrollados.

No vamos a tener, a partir de 1920, arquitectos geniales que creen algo impensado, pero sí van a surgir muchos constructores con ganas de reformar lo antiguo y de introducir una nueva sensibilidad estética en la pálida y enfermiza arquitectura española. Como el número de obras y de autores se multiplica por momentos y en la mayoría de los casos falta perspectiva suficiente para valorar la obra de los más recientes, hemos decidido hacer una selección provisional, que en ningún momento pretende ser canónica.

El estilo gótico es el característico de la Baja Edad Media y su representación arquitectónica más importante son las catedrales que definen esta época como el románico había caracterizado a la anterior. La catedral gótica es una obra maestra de la arquitectura de todos los tiempos que ha dejado buenas muestras de su valor en muchas ciudades europeas bajomedievales.
