Desde tiempos de los iberos y de los celtíberos, los lugares adecuados para la defensa o el ataque se vieron fortificados con construcciones acordes con las técnicas que estos pueblos dominaban. Pero al evolucionar la poliorcética, o arte militar, las construccio­nes militares fueron adquiriendo una nueva fisonomía. La palabra "castellum", de la que se deriva "castillo", es un diminutivo de "castrum", el asentamiento militar romano por excelencia. En principio tuvieron carácter temporal, y fueron instrumentos de ataque más que de defensa.

Junto a la gran arquitectura románica que marca indefectiblemente la Europa medieval aparece, como es natural, una escultura y una pintura que la acompaña en toda su extensión. El arte románico se ha convertido en el gran arte altomedieval que fue el resultado del esfuerzo germánico sobre los restos clásicos anteriores.

Dentro de los estilos que rodean los últimos años del siglo XIX sólo uno merece la calificación de original: el modernismo catalán, exaltado en la figura de Antonio Gaudí. Esta manifestación va a ser, como es natural, el vértice y piedra de toque de la selección presente. Pero en la misma época construyen en España muchos otros arquitectos representantes de tendencias nacionales o importadas que no podíamos dejar marginados a la hora de presentar una visión completa de la arquitectura española.

Nos encontramos ante un producto artístico plena­mente oriental. El problema de que los árabes no fueran creadores de formas artísticas propias no resta mérito alguno a su labor. Las soluciones arquitectónicas por ellos adoptadas habían sido empleadas por persas y bizantinos desde muchos siglos atrás, pero lo cierto es que sólo los árabes lograron hacer de este arte un arte universal.

Tras la muerte de Almanzor (1002), los reinos leonés y navarro, a los que pronto se va a unir el castellano, se aprovechan de la mala situación política y militar en que navegaba el califato y avanzan impetuosamente hacia el sur. Es la época de Sancho el Mayor, de Fernando I, de Alfonso VI, reyes que favorecieron ampliamente la entrada de las corrientes culturales francas en sus reinos.

No vamos a tener, a partir de 1920, arquitectos geniales que creen algo impensado, pero sí van a surgir muchos constructores con ganas de reformar lo antiguo y de introducir una nueva sensibilidad estética en la pálida y enfermiza arquitectura española. Como el número de obras y de autores se multiplica por momentos y en la mayoría de los casos falta perspectiva suficiente para valorar la obra de los más recientes, hemos decidido hacer una selección provisional, que en ningún momento pretende ser canónica.

Ya anticipábamos en la tema 24, dedicada al arte isabelino y plateresco, lo convencional de tla duración de un periodo artístico. A esa convencional división cronológica se le añade la necesidad de reducir a dos temas la arquitectura renacentista española. Ante tamaña dificultad, hemos huido de los caminos habituales, buscando la mejor realización práctica de los temas. De este modo, podemos asegurar una visión completa de la arquitectura renacentista a través de las series 24 y de esta.
