Ancient Poetry

This album is the fifth in the series Ancient Poems, which recites and interprets ancient poems. Classical poetry is a genre of poetry. Judging from the number of words in the verse, there are so-called four-character poems, five-character poems, seven-character poems, and miscellaneous poems.

A nightingale overhears a student complaining that the professor's daughter will not dance with him, as he is unable to give her a red rose; a lizard, a butterfly and a daisy laugh at the student for doing so. The nightingale visits all the rose-trees in the garden, and one of the roses tells her there is a way to produce a red rose, but only if the nightingale is prepared to sing the sweetest song for the rose all night with her heart pressing into a thorn, sacrificing her life.

Le narrateur prend le bus à une heure d'affluence. Il observe un jeune homme avec un chapeau et un cou trop long. Celui-ci s'énerve contre son voisin qui, dit-il, le bouscule chaque fois que passe quelqu'un. Voyant une place libre, il finit par aller s'asseoir. Deux heures plus tard, le narrateur voit le jeune homme place Saint-Lazare qui discute avec un ami de questions vestimentaires. Cette brève histoire est racontée quatre-vingt-dix-neuf fois, de quatre-vingt-dix-neuf manières différentes. Mise en images, portée sur la scène des cabarets, elle a connu une fortune extraordinaire.

This evocative poem was first published in 1832 but republished in 1842 with extensive alterations.

La Epopeya de Gilgamesh o Poema de Gilgamesh es una narración de origen sumerio, considerada como la narraciónescrita más antigua de la historia. Se emplearon tablillas de arcilla y escritura cuneiforme, lo cual favoreció su preservación. This extraordinary poem, which is a florid display of Smart's opinions on a variety of theological, historical, and scientific subjects, was written between 1759 and 1763, while the author was confined in a lunatic asylum. His condition was diagnosed as religious mania, as evidenced by his compulsion to break into spontaneous prayer in public.

Purgatory is the second part of Dante's The Divine Comedy. The listener finds the Poet, with his guide Virgil, ascending the terraces of the Mount of Purgatory inhabited by those doing penance to expiate their sins on earth. Perhaps the most famous epic poem ever written, the Iliad has been read for nearly 3000 years, making it also one of the oldest written works in the Western world.
