The year 1777 is bleak indeed for the cause of American Independence, with the British army twice defeating Washington and taking the capital city of Philadelphia and the Royal Navy sweeping aside the defenses of the Delaware Bay. For Captain Isaac Biddlecomb and the men of the half-built frigate Falmouth, things are direr still. Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln had only three meetings, but their exchanges profoundly influenced the course of slavery and the outcome of the Civil War. George Washington didn't really walk around with a mouthful of wooden teeth. Those are real teeth and pearl inlays in Washington's dentures. A recent study by Mary Thompson suggests Washington experimented with early dental transplants. He purchased replacement teeth from his slaves for 13 shillings (roughly $50 in 2015 money).

There are many legends about the great Davy Crockett. In the movies people claim he could ride lightning, leap over rivers and fight wildcats with his bare hands. In the 2004 movie The Alamo, it is suggested that he was more cowardly than the legends, and if it was his choice, he would “slip over the wall” and escape. They also suggest that he only wore his famous coon skin caps because the actor who portrayed him did. Other stories claim he was an absolutely fearless warrior who loved a good fight.
