American Philosophy

John Dewey (1859-1952) was the foremost American philosopher in the first half of the twentieth century. He developed the school of American Pragmatism in the wake of Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) and William James (1842-1910). Born in the year that Darwin’s On the Origin of Species appeared, Dewey articulated a philosophy deeply influenced by the Darwinian emphasis on continuity and process in nature as opposed to fixed, archetypal species. Black education was a subversive act from its inception. African Americans pursued education through clandestine means, often in defiance of law and custom, even under threat of violence. They developed what Jarvis Givens calls a tradition of "fugitive pedagogy"—a theory and practice of Black education in America. The enslaved learned to read in spite of widespread prohibitions; newly emancipated people braved the dangers of integrating all-White schools and the hardships of building Black schools.
