Former Confederate President Jefferson Davis penned "The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government" in 1881, offering a historical perspective and justification for the Confederacy's formation and actions during the Civil War. While serving as a valuable primary source for understanding Confederate leadership's motivations, the work is also recognized for its biased defense of the Confederacy and its "Lost Cause" narrative.

Abraham Lincoln did not come out of nowhere. But if he was shaped by his times, he also managed at his life's fateful hour to shape them to an extent few could have foreseen. Ultimately, this is the great drama that astonishes us still, and that Abe brings to fresh and vivid life. The measure of that life will always be part of our American education.

The 1856 presidential race was the most violent peacetime election in American history.
