But in 1920, a group of historians known as the Lincoln Inquiry were determined to give Lincoln’s formative years their due. When one thinks of true American heroes, many names come to mind. One often overlooked president held the fate of the entire North American continent in his hands. Of all the Americans who became renowned for expeditions to the West, few were as famous - or infamous - as John Charles Fremont, whose work produced some of the region’s most detailed maps and propelled him to national fame. Among other things, he taught mathematics to midshipmen on a Navy warship on a long cruise off South America, served as governor of two states and a Senator for one, was court-martialed for insubordination, issued the first emancipation proclamation, and eloped with the daughter of a powerful U.S. Senator.

Stevenson was impressed into the Confederate Army, serving in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama in the hospital service from mid-1861 until June 1862, when he escaped to the North. This is a "narrative of personal adventures in the infantry, ordnance, cavalry, courier, and hospital services, with an exhibition of the power, purposes, earnestness, military despotism, and demoralization of the South". First published in 1862.

From 1861 till his assassination in 1865, Abraham Lincoln was an American legal representative and statesman who functioned as the 16th president of the United States. Lincoln led the nation through the American Civil War, preserving the Union, eliminating slavery, enhancing the federal government, and helping the economy of the United States. Lincoln grew up on the frontier, mainly in Indiana, and was born into poverty in a log cabin.
