America First History

Central to America's idea of itself is the character of Benjamin Franklin. We all know him, or think we do: In recent works and in our inherited conventional wisdom, he remains fixed in place as a genial polymath and self-improver who was so very American that he is known by us all as the first American.

Donald Trump was elected president pledging to put America first, as any nation's leader should put his or her own people first. There needs to be an America-first reevaluation of him and his predecessors. This volume, a collection of 11 original essays by many of the foremost US military historians, focuses on the transition of the army from parade ground to battleground in each of nine wars the United States has fought.
