Black women have higher rates of premature birth than other women in America. This cannot be simply explained by economic factors, with poorer women lacking resources or access to care. Even professional, middle-class Black women are at a much higher risk of premature birth than low-income White women in the United States. Dána-Ain Davis looks into this phenomenon, placing racial differences in birth outcomes into a historical context, revealing that ideas about reproduction and race today have been influenced by the legacy of ideas which developed during the era of slavery.

Black women have been dehumanized through sexual objectification in the United States of America for hundreds of years and are still being degraded to this very day. Can’t Tell Me Nothing is a critical anthology that helps us to talk about things that hurt when it comes to Black hair; what makes us uncomfortable and squeamish with pain as we recall our personal history with hair care from the kitchen to the salon. Sixteen brave Black women have poured out their souls in this book. They share about their unspoken pains and hair traumas; the things we don’t like to talk about when it comes to Black hair, but they impact us just the same. When Betsey Stockton was a child, she was "given, as a slave" to the household of Rev. Ashbel Green, a prominent pastor and later the president of what is now Princeton University. Although she never went to school, she devoured the books in Green's library. After being emancipated, she used that education to benefit other people of color, first in Hawai'i as a missionary, then Philadelphia, and, for the last three decades of her life, Princeton—a college town with a genteel veneer that never fully hid its racial hostility.

A poignant biography as told to Olive Gilbert by Isabella Bomefree - a slave who later took the name of Sojourner Truth. She recounts the harshness of life under slavery, and after winner her freedom, became a vociferous abolitionist for which she has been long remembered and revered.

Now is the time for women of color to step into their distinct power and be the transformative force for good at work. But first, we have to be honest about the misogyny and racism that women of color experience at work and in their lives.

In June 2022, at the Black Men’s Forum (BMF), we went to the source and provided a platform for African American men and a few African American male teenagers to speak their truths in answering 58 questions. All information shared is a part of history and will be passed onto the next generation to build upon society and learn about the strengths and hindrances affecting African-American boys.
