Book two of the Rise of Daniel continues to follow Daniel, Jeremiah, and Nebuchadnezzar at the beginning of the Babylonian Captivity. Daniel and his three friends find themselves immersed in a growing spiritual battle between the gods of Babylon and the God of Israel. The captives are expected to conform to a new way of life, learn a new language, and bow to false gods. If they are found unworthy to stand before King Nebuchadnezzar, they will perish. Book one of the Rise of Daniel follows Daniel, Jeremiah, and Nebuchadnezzar at the beginning of the Babylonian Captivity. Daniel, merely a boy of fourteen, is thrust into a world of conspiracy and evil when Jeremiah the prophet predicts the coming of the powerful Babylonian prince, Nebuchadnezzar, to conquer Jerusalem. The kingdom of Judah has turned her back on the God of Israel, trusting in the Egyptians and the gods of the heathen nations around them.

The Chisholm Trail was approximately 800 miles long, running from San Antonio, Texas to the shipping pens at Abilene, Kansas. This trail was an important part of the old west and part of the lives of thousands of cowboys of the 19th and into the early 20th century. Theodore Roosevelt began this 1899 speech with his thesis: “I wish to preach, not the doctrine of ignoble ease, but the doctrine of the strenuous life.” He discusses how the many hardships of his life shaped him for the better. Cthulhu lovers take note, this early story of the sea god Dagon is considered to be part of the Cthulhu mythos. In Dagon, the protagonist is lost at sea for days, wading through dead fish and other foulness, until he comes to an island with a monolith on a rocky hillside. After chasing a “monster", the protagonists find themselves prisoners on a futuristic submarine called the Nautilus. Their captor is Captain Nemo, and the prisoners enjoy a wild ride on the Nautilus. Visiting far-flung regions of the ocean, they see amazing coral formations, sunken vessels, the Antarctic ice barrier, the South Pole, the transatlantic telegraph cable, and Atlantis, the legendary underwater kingdom. In the underwater forests off Crespo Island, they hunt sharks, but when the submarine returns to the Atlantic Ocean, giant squid attacks them....

Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian author, translator, and popularizer of Russian literature in the West. "Mumu" is about Gerasim, a deaf-mute serf whose life of poverty is brought into sharp relief by his love for a dog he rescues from drowning. His wealthy old mistress sees the dog Mumu and wants it but Mumu bares her teeth at her, and tragedy follows.
