Adam Cain: Bounty Hunter, Mercenary, Bodyguard. In his line of work, Adam makes a lot of enemies. The problem: Enemies have long memories. REVs have been exiled from Earth, with the remaining few treated like criminals and required to wear armbands and tattoos, harkening back to another tragic time in the history of mankind. In a continuation of the events begun in Raiders of the Shadow, Adam Cain and Copernicus Smith face off against an old enemy . . . in fact, several old enemies. The Klin have returned, as have the Second Generation Humans from the early days of The Human Chronicles. Their old foe is back at it again, but this time teamed up with the deadly weapons manufacturer Xan-fi, on another galaxy-conquering quest. But this time, they won't be denied.

After his last two jobs left him broke and in debt, The Human for Hire is looking for a way to make some quick cash. And that's when three Human friends from his past show up, offering him a piece of the action in an upcoming bank robbery. At first, he says no. But then the details come out. Now they're going to make Adam and his friends pay for it. After placing an exorbitant bounty on the heads of each team member, nearly every creature in the galaxy becomes a hired killer. Although Adam's never been one to run from a fight, this may be too much for even him.

As the evil Klin continue their rampage across the galaxy, Adam enlists the help of mutants Panur and Lila to find a solution to the Klin problem. But time is running out. The deadly power of the Klin is growing exponentially with each passing day. And add to that the sniveling politicians from the Expansion and the Union who fear Adam's daughter Lila more than they do the Klin. Now Adam is up against enemies on both sides of the conflict, leaving it up to him and his team to save the galaxy—again. But this time he has some major brain-power on his side.

Mysteries and mayhem are abundant in the Dead Zone, keeping Marshal Adam Cain and his deputy, Riyad Tarazi, hopping from one crisis to another. Little do they know, Panur is no longer immortal and he will surely die if Adam Cain and his friends can't find him and Adam's daughter, Lila, in time.

With the clock ticking to total destruction of the universe, Adam Cain and Company race to find the imprisoned Last Aris, an insane creature they've run into before: Kracion! He's the key to saving . . . everything. But will he help? Will he care if the universe dies? And in the meantime, the evil Te'moc is still on the warpath, seeking to assimilate both Summer Rains and the super-mutant Panur—who's a little preoccupied at the time. And to top it all off, the Sol-Kor have reached the point of no return in their search for their missing Queen-J'nae.

With the ancient Aris service module Kanan out of the picture - at least for a while - there's a lot for Marshal Adam Cain to tend to within the Dead Zone. If Adam thought things were wild and woolly before, wait until he sees what happens in the aftermath of Kanan. Politics, terrorists, assassins, thieves, and more...I could go on and on, but you get the picture. And now, as Adam slowly builds a secret force of super agents within the ranks of Enforcers, they begin to take on assignments usually reserved for, well, supermen. Fortunately, the shoe fits.
