Covered in grotesque wounds, he staggered toward Holmes, shrieked, "the Lion's Mane", and died on the spot. The seaside was tranquil no longer....

A young Sussex gentleman named John Openshaw has a strange story: in 1869 his uncle Elias Openshaw had suddenly come back to England to settle on an estate at Horsham, West Sussex, after living for years in the United States as a Planter in Florida and serving as a Colonel in the Confederate Army....

At the request of an old rugby friend of Dr. Watson, Sherlock Holmes finds himself on a hunt for a vampire - or rather, on a mission to prove that vampires are the stuff of Medieval legend, not a part of the modern world. Holmes is certain that he can discover the true murderer, but will it be the undoing of Miss Turner?

Holmes and Watson arrive at Trinity College, summoned by a message that rugby star, Godfrey Staunton, has disappeared. Staunton is the key man on Overton's rugby team, and they will never win the important match if he cannot be found. Holmes admits that sport is a bit outside his ken, but he takes this case as seriously as any other. It proves not all elementary.

After some cajoling on the part of Watson, Sherlock Holmes takes pen in hand to write about one of his investigations. Watson, who at the time had selfishly deserted Holmes to take a wife, has no notes on this particular case, so we're privileged to hear, in the great detective's own words, the accounting of one of his strangest adventures.

The bride of Lord St. Simon disappears on the day of their marriage. Holmes and Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard are both called to help. Who will be the first to solve this mystery?

Holmes discovers Dr. Watson in the black shadows of a smoke-filled opium den in the basement of the very house where Holmes is investigating his latest murder case! But of course the good doctor is only there to hunt down the drug-addicted husband of his wife's dear, but distraught, friend. Sound confusing? For all but The Great Detective, it probably is. And we haven't even talked about the murder yet!

Very odd happenings cause a hydraulic engineer to lose his thumb - and lead Holmes and Watson to a band of criminals.

Sir Eustace Brackenstall has been killed, apparently by a gang of burglars. Sherlock Holmes must solve this complex riddle, which involves abuse, betrayal and possible adultery.

A murder has been committed, and the most valuable clue is a gold-rimmed pince-nez (a type of eyeglasses without stems that are secured by pinching the nose) apparently dropped by the killer. Scotland Yard detective Stanley Hopkins returns as Sherlock's foil to contrast the common policeman's take on the mystery with Sherlock's own genius insight into the matter.
