Today, when Russia has regained its power on the world stage and Putin is restoring many of the old traditions and systems, it is helpful to understand what Russia was like at the time of transformation set in motion by Gorbachev and continued by Yeltsin. For a time Russia went through a period called "glasnost" and "perestroika" when all things seemed possible and a spirit of democracy was in the air.

Making Ethical Choices, Resolving Ethical Dilemmas reflects a new approach to understanding ethics - one's own and others - based on what people actually do and say they do, rather than what they have been taught are the right and ethical things to do. The three tales in this audiobook are adapted from stories told by the peasants in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. They are drawn from some books I found in shops when I visited the former USSR in 1988 as part of a citizen diplomacy group. I was intrigued by these folktales, since my paternal grandmother lived for some time in Odessa in the Ukraine. Also, I found these stories share a common theme - the poor peasant is able to succeed despite obstacles against an unfair ruler.

The following three tales are adapted from stories told by the American Indians. These are three of my favorite coyote stories. They are: "The Story of Coyote, Buffalo, and the Rock", told by the Sioux, a tribe from the Northwest, where they once formed the Great Sioux Nation, in the area that later became the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Montana, and Wyoming.

Suddenly, he hears a thumping noise in his closet, and there he meets two tiny characters: Count DeVille, who looks like a frog-man in a cape, and Sir Tolliver, a man with a mustache, red cape, and bloomers. There, he experiences a series of adventures, both fun and sometimes scary, as he travels around on a boat or bubble with Sir Tolliver and Count Deville.
