Ulisse è un giovane scrittore in crisi creativa (un tempo ha scritto un libro ma si è fermato lì), lavora in una casa editrice sull'orlo del collasso ed è innamorato di Pilar-Penelope, una bellissima immigrata senza permesso di soggiorno (ma non rinuncia alla sua inveterata poligamia). Un giorno riceve la lettera di uno sconosciuto che lo invita a un misterioso appuntamento. Ulisse, incuriosito, risponde e conosce Achille, un ragazzo gravemente malato che gli apre un mondo inatteso di assurdità, vitalità e dolore.

Protagonisti di questo romanzo sono due grandi amici, l'inglese Archie e il bengalese Samad. In una Londra dove l'estremismo è all'ordine del giorno, i due danno vita a una strana quanto improbabile coppia: Archie ha sempre seguito la corrente, Samad, invece, è un musulmano convinto, che mal sopporta la decadenza della società occidentale. Ad aggravare la già inquieta atmosfera arrivano i Chalfen, agiati intellettuali inglesi carichi di tutti i tic e le illusioni della Generazione dei Fiori. E l'incontro-scontro fra le diverse culture produrrà effetti tragicomici non meno che devastanti.

Stefano Benni sfida il racconto di genere e apre la porta dell'orrore. Lo fa con ironia, lo fa attingendo al grottesco, lo fa tuffandosi nel comico, lo fa tastando l'angoscia, lo fa, in omaggio ai suoi maestri, rammentandoci di cosa è fatta la paura. E finisce con il consegnarci una galleria di memorabili mostri. E allora ecco gli adolescenti senza prospettiva o speranza, ecco il Wenge - una creatura misteriosa che semina panico e morte -, ecco il plutocrate russo che vuole sbarazzarsi di un albero secolare, ecco una Madonna che invece di piangere ride, dolcemente sfrontata.

Lo incontriamo da ragazzino mentre "scarpagna" verso le Bisacconi (le scuole elementari del paese). Sono gli anni '50 e mentre ruba in una vigna un grappolo di schizzozibibbo, Lupetto, così lo chiamano, vede un uomo alto, con una barba immensa e un vecchio cane. È una divinità pagana, sporca come un letamaio, che gli regala una facoltà meravigliosa: un orologio interno, un orobilogio, che gli consentirà di correre avanti nel tempo.

Dopo più di vent'anni il mitico Bar Sport e i suoi magnifici eroi hanno subito le trasformazioni del tempo: la proverbiale pasta Luisona è scomparsa, nel Bar Veramente Fico adesso espongono brioche invisibili a occhio nudo; tra gli avventori nessuno ha più una colorazione naturale, e si possono ammirare le abbronzature color albicocca o vitel tonné maschili piuttosto che i color biscotto dei fard e dei Caraibi femminili; nuovi elementi, tra cui spiccano i tristemente noti cellularisti, abilissimi nel rispondere al trillo nelle situazioni più impervie.
