  • We, the Game Changers S1E8 | Karen Bryant
    Jul 18 2025
This episode features an iconic disruptor of basketball, Karen Bryant. Karen (colloquially known as "KB") is a professional sports executive who has played a key role in establishing professional women's basketball, with a particularly meaningful impact on Seattle's basketball culture. Widely acknowledged as a professional sports visionary and community leader, KB has deep roots in Seattle - She started her basketball journey as an athlete at Woodway High, then on to Green River Community College, SeattleU, and the UW. At just 30(ish) years old, she was recruited by the American Basketball League (ABL) to launch the Seattle Reign of the ABL. After the ABL folded, Karen was hired by the Ackerley family and the Seattle SuperSonics in 1999 to help establish what is now the 4x WNBA Champion Seattle Storm. An executive leader within the sports industry for over 25 years, Karen spent 15 years with the Seattle Storm, where she served as COO for six years before holding the position of President and CEO for her final seven years with the team. Karen was a crucial member working for both the Sonics and Storm during the now infamous departure of the Sonics and the transition of the Storm to the all-women Force 10 ownership group. Under her guidance as President & CEO, the Storm won the WNBA Championship in 2004 and 2010. After a successful run with the Storm, Bryant co-founded KB2 Sports, an advisory company focused on growing and advancing women’s sports. Bryant was hired by the Sparks in 2021 as a strategic advisor before taking on the role of Interim President, Business Operations. KB continues to influence the global sports landscape as an advisor and consultant across a variety of sport organizations, and her list of accolades and philanthropic contributions is seemingly infinite, including being named Sports Executive of the Year at the Seattle Sports Commission's annual Sports Star of the Year Awards. Whether you're an aspiring leader or a seasoned professional, this series will leave you feeling empowered and ready to make a difference. This episode features disruptor Sue Rahr, whose 40+ years in law enforcement significantly influenced modern policing methods both regionally and nationally. Sue has a storied history of leadership in modern policing, culture change, and recruitment. She helped introduce the "guardian" mindset to policing, and is a lifelong Pete Carroll fan for his leadership approach. Prior to her most recent role as Seattle's interim Chief of Police, Sue served as King County Sheriff, Executive Director of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission, and was a member of President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. She also served as a member of the “Executive Session on Policing” at the Harvard Kennedy School, and serves as an advisor to many national police reform programs and organizations in addition to her work in the non-profit community. How she found herself in law enforcement may not have been by original design, but her positive disruption of that industry was no mistake. Learn more about your ad choices.
