    Today, Thursday, July 17 on Urban Forum Northwest:

    *Attorney Erika Evans is a candidate for Seattle City Attorney Office. She is a graduate of the University of Washington and Seattle University School of Law. She recently served as Assistant Attorney General, US Attorney for Western Washington.

    *Hayward Evans, Co Convener, Seattle King County Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration/Continuation Committee (MLKCC). After a several month delay he and Dr. Lora-Ellen McKinney were finally seated on the Central District Community Preservation & Development Authority (CDCPDA) Board of Directors.

    *Dr. Anita Johnson Connell was recently honored by Women Of Wonder (WOW) for her Legacy of Impact, Embodiment of Healing and Black Love, Cultural and Historical Significance, Integrity and Authenticity and Community Recognition and Respect. She also was a leader on the campus in the 60's at the University of Washington making demands for more Black Students, Black Faculty, and Administrators.

    * The following individuals will pay tribute and share stories about the late Dr. Charles H. Mitchell who passed away on June 27.

    Paul Mitchell Charles brother, Coach Al Roberts lived with the Mitchell family when he was recruited by UW football, Jamal (Martin Wyatt) was a teammate of Charles at UW and was his presenter into the UW Football Hall of Fame, and Dr. Anita Johnson Connell was Charles Neighbor.

    *Tana Yasu is the late Joe Brazil's grandniece and is the coordinator of the Joe Brazil Legacy Project. Joe founded the Black Academy of Music and was a Music Professor at the UW School of Music, there was awaiting list to get into his class and he was still denied tenure. The "Hotter Than July" Music Festival will be held Sunday, July 20 1:00-6:30 pm at Be'er Sheva Park 8650 55th South (Rainier Beach Boat Launch Park).

    Today, Thursday, July 10 on Urban Forum Northwest:

    *Congressman Adam Smith (D) WA-09 Ranking Member House Armed Services Committee, a member of the New Democrat Coalition and the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the dean of Washington's House delegation. He was elected to the Washington State Senate in 19991when he was 25 years old the youngest person ever elected to the Senate and served until 1997. He has been a vocal advocate for working class Americans in his district and the country. He has been an outstanding advocate for the underserved, supporting programs like American 4 Equality/MLK Gandhi Empowerment Initiative.

    *Hayward Evans, co convener, Seattle King County Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration/Continuation Committee (MLKCC). He has been a candidate for the Board of Directors the Central District Community Preservation &Development Authority (CDCPDA) aka the Reverend Dr. Samuel B. McKinney Center for Community and Economic Development since February and Dr. McKinney's daughter Dr. Lora-Ellen McKinney has been a candidate for the CDCPDA Board of Directors since March. He will comment on why they have not been seated.

    *Reverend Dr. LaVerne Hall was one of the first employees of Seattle Opportunities Industrialization Center (SOIC) when the program started in the Fellowship Hall of Mount Zion Baptist Church. She is known for being a fierce advocate for the Black Community and she is known for the work she did on the Sojourner Truth Exhibition. She is very concerned about the status of the CDCPDA and the building that was erected to house SOIC in 1974.

    *Dr. Gregory K. Alex comments on the legacy and leadership of the late Dr. Charles H. Mitchell, a UW All American football player. Dr. Alex was one of four African American UW football players that were dismissed from the UW football team in 1969. Dr. Carver Gayton was the first African American coach in the schools history and took a stand in support of the Black players by resigning. The four dismissed African American players were inducted into University of Washington Football Hall of Fame in 2022.

    Anthony Long, Executive Assistant & Board Relations Manager, Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI), they are hosting a July 15 event honoring Nelson Mandela's 1999 visit to Seattle. There will be some of the event organizers will be present and Larry Gossett and some students who met him during his visit will share some remarks. There will be performance by Djeliyah Band. MOHAI is hosting the Nelson Mandela Exhibit May 24-September 7.

  • Attorney Jesse Wineberry Sr, Sheley Secrest Anderson, president, Washington State NAACP and more

    Today, Thursday, July 3 on Urban Forum Northwest:

    *Attorney Jesse Wineberry Sr., co founder, Washington Equity Now Alliance (WENA) has been one of the leaders in Washington State seeking to get justice for the state's African Americans who are descendants of U. S. chattel slaves. Funds have been allocated for the Reparations Study and he will comment on the status of the study.

    *Attorney Sheley Secrest Anderson, president, Washington State NAACP has been and continues to be an advocate for economic justice for African Americans in Washington State today. She was active participant in meetings with state officials regarding the Reparations Study.

    *Hayward Evans, co convener, Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration/Continuation Committee (MLKCC) was one of the leaders in lobbying for the passage of House Bill 1918 sponsored by Representative Sharon Tomiko Santos, the bill created the Central District Community Preservation & Development Authority (CDCPDA) aka the McKinney Center for Community & Economic Development. He has been denied membership to the CDCPDA Board of Directors since March.
