Saint Lawrence gives all he has, both to the poor and to God. In acts of service and bold witness under threat, Lawrence teaches a bold faith paired with charity. Sixtus also leads with quiet wisdom and perseverance; and Philip, a ‘rich young man,’ sacrifices everything with generosity.

It depicts forced participation in pagan rituals, unjust imprisonment, the torture of a Christian convert, and the martyrdom of clergy. One man has his eyes removed before later regaining sight. Lawrence is executed, as is recorded historically, by being burned on a gridiron. Catherine, a mystic, received the stigmata, but is also remembered for a major political achievement: through her intervention, she fought to return the papacy to Rome from Avignon, France. Catherine’s complete trust in God led her to act to restore the papacy to its rightful place at the head of the Church, instead of being merely a political position.

This series contains moments of danger and intensity, including raised voices. Bernabo Visconti, an Italian tyrant, forces a representative of the pope to eat the message he was sent to deliver. The Pope is torn between his loyalties to his father and his duties to the Church. Catherine experiences intense visions, often collapsing in a mystical ecstasy. It is during one of these visions that she receives the stigmata. Bernabo Visconti threatens several characters. Characters are shown drinking after a successful battle. Bernabo Visconti mocks the idea of excommunication.
