  • Ep 19: 90's Progressive Trance feat. Hooj Choons
    May 22 2025

Founded in 1990 by Alex Simons and Red Jerry (real name Jeremy Dickens), Hooj Choons was born out of London’s underground club scene with one mission: to release forward-thinking dance music that didn’t give a damn about trends. While Simons exited the label in the mid-90s, Red Jerry took the reins and led Hooj through its golden era—dropping genre-defining tracks that fused trance, house, and breakbeat into something deeper, darker, and smarter than the commercial charts could handle. Hooj sleeves became a mark of trust for DJs: if it was Hooj, it was going in the set. The label built a cult following with artists like Tilt, Medway, Lustral, Solar Stone, Killahurtz, and Lost Tribe, and later earned iconic status with its tongue-in-cheek compilation series “Some of These Were Hooj.” Red Jerry’s own mixes and A&R instincts helped define what progressive dance music meant in the UK—and beyond. This isn’t trance the way the mainstream remembers it. This is progressive trance. In this mix, you'll hear meditative uplifts from Solar Stone, brooding grooves from Medway, twisted late-night spirals from LSG, and enough Red Jerry mixes to build a church. There are dubby versions, creeping Farmatronic edits, and vocal tracks that somehow felt more like mantras than lyrics. This is music made for moments—not for festivals, but for back rooms, closed-eye sets, and headphone pilgrimages. Built from layers, driven by groove, and remembered by the heads who never needed glowsticks to get high. Here it is, 2 hours of Hooj; 1991-1999 hits! 01. Diss-Cuss - Save the Day (Aquarius Mix) 02. • Ep 18: 90's Trance feat. Additive Records
    Apr 11 2025

Just in time for the weekend - let's get some 90's trance going! Additive Records was a UK-based sub-label of the legendary Positiva Records, and while it may not have had the flashiest branding, it played a critical role in shaping the underground-to-mainstream pipeline of late ’90s and early 2000s electronic music. Think of it as Positiva’s cooler, more discerning younger sibling — the one digging through crates while the big brother was cashing radio hits.

Where Positiva was known for massive crossover dance anthems and polished commercial smashes, Additive was the vinyl-only proving ground — a boutique imprint designed to test the club viability of more progressive and experimental tracks. If a release did well on Additive, chances were good it might graduate to a full-blown Positiva release with the marketing machine behind it.

This was music for DJs, pure and simple. High-quality 12” pressings, remixes that weren’t afraid to be 9 minutes long, and a catalogue full of gems that would heat up the dancefloor before most people even knew the name of the track. I knew it for trance, but it also churned out massive progressive house records (the real progressive house, not this modern "Prog House" stuff) so we'll warm up this episode with a few house cuts before breaking away into their better known trance cuts.

  • Ep 17: 90's Hard House feat. The Sound of the Hoover
    Mar 14 2025
The Sound of the Hoover: A Tribute to the Raw Energy of Rave

Few sounds in electronic music are as instantly recognizable and electrifying as the "Hoover" synth—an aggressive, howling lead that became a defining feature of early rave, techno, and hard house. The The Sound of the Hoover compilation series pays tribute to this legendary sound, compiling tracks that capture the raw intensity and dancefloor energy that defined an underground generation.

The Sound of the Hoover compilation series is more than just a nostalgic throwback—it highlights an era before the mainstream club success of hard house, shining a light on the pioneering work of labels like TEC that paved the way. While Nukleuz and Tidy Trax later refined and popularized the sound, TEC embodied the raw, untamed energy of underground raving.

For fans of classic rave music, high-intensity synths, and the unfiltered chaos of warehouse clubbing, The Sound of the Hoover remains essential listening—an electrifying tribute to one of dance music’s most legendary and enduring sounds.
