In the 1970's, Pittsburgh was known as the "City of Champions" with the Steelers, Pirates, and University of Pittsburgh winning titles throughout the decade. The Penguins, however, had minimal success during those years. All of that would change in 1984 when they drafted Mario Lemieux. The 6'4" center from Montreal was phenomenal his first few years in the NHL, but he needed a strong supporting cast to make Pittsburgh a contender. Enter 5 time Stanley Cup winning coach Scotty Bowman, the Penguins drafted a prodigy in Jaromir Jagr, acquired a Czech-mate for the right winger, and made a blockbuster trade with the Hartford Whalers. Along with an upbeat player's coach in "Badger" Bob Johnson, the 1990-91 season would be the year it finally came together for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Questions, Comments, Concerns?
