Mick Abel was pure magic in his MLB debut as he helps pitch the Philadelphia Phillies to a 1-0 Win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Mick Abel put on a historic performance in his big league debut, tying Curt Simmons’ record set in 1947 for most strikeouts in his MLB debut for a Phillies pitcher with nine K’s over his six-scoreless innings. Abel topped out with his fastball at 99 m.p.h. then used his curve and slider with great effectiveness. He faced a first and third with two outs situation in the 3rd inning, but got out of it by Spencer Horwitz to top a 96 m.p.h. Fastball for an inning ending grounder to second base.

The run support Abel received, as the score would indicate, was sparse. Nick Castellanos led off the 5th inning with an infield single to third. Then Max Kepler delivered a single into center field. Castellanos read it perfectly and made it to third on the hit. The Phillies had runners at the corners with no outs. After Alec Bohm flied out to center for the first out of the inning, Brandon Marsh put a bouncer up the middle and JUST beat the throw to first to beat out a double play ball allowing Castellanos to cross the plate for the lone run of the ball game.

Orion Kerkering, Matt Strahm and Jordan Romano closed out the game for Abel to pick up his first major league win!
