The Locked Room

Detective Samantha Jones stood in the center of the crime scene, her eyes scanning the room. The victim, a wealthy businessman named Robert Thompson, lay face down on the plush carpet, a pool of blood surrounding his head. The room was locked from the inside, and there were no signs of forced entry.

Samantha's partner, Detective Mike Harris, entered the room, his face grim. "The coroner says he's been dead for at least six hours," he said. "But the strange thing is, the door was locked from the inside, and the windows are sealed shut. It's like he was killed by a ghost."

Samantha furrowed her brow, deep in thought. She noticed a small, ornate key on the floor near the victim's body. She picked it up and examined it closely. "I think I know what happened," she said.

She walked over to the bookshelf and ran her fingers along the spines of the books. Suddenly, she pulled one of the books forward, and the shelf swung open, revealing a hidden room. Inside, they found a safe, and the key in Samantha's hand fit perfectly.

When they opened the safe, they found a suicide note written by Robert Thompson. In it, he confessed to embezzling money from his company and explained that he couldn't live with the guilt anymore. He had planned his death carefully, locking the door from the inside and hiding the key before taking his own life.

Samantha sighed, closing the safe. "It's a tragic end to a life filled with secrets," she said. "But at least now we know the truth."

As they left the room, Mike shook his head. "I never would have guessed it was a suicide," he said. "You really are the best detective in the business, Samantha."

She smiled sadly. "Sometimes, the truth is harder to accept than the mystery itself."
