  • Bonus Episode: Cockney Rhyming Slang for Car Names...
    Jul 15 2025

    Send us a text

Join us for a 5 minutes of bonus chat about utilizing Cockney Rhyming Slang in reference to vehicles of the past.

A VW Jetta could be a Red Setter, a Hans Solo a VW Polo, a Nelson and Winnie a Mini.

Trying to get further ideas we turned to Chat GPT, but sadly the magic of rhyming slang is lost on AI, and its suggestions were all laughable for the wrong reasons... Pretty pony and trap to be honest.

Can you think of any good ones? Get in touch - we'll sort a mug out for our favourite!

  • Nathan Tregonning - Mental Health Car Club: My Grandad had a Sierra Cosworth S6E8
    Jul 8 2025

    Send us a text

This week we are joined by Nathan Tregonning, the man behind the Mental Health Car Club, and in Jon's absence, we welcome a special guest host (and previous guest himself) Paul Gardner from Speed Broker.

Nathan's earliest and fondest car memory was travelling to Whitby in his Grandad's Sierra Cosworth. From memory it was a navy blue 3 door, although that was based on an aged photograph. The 1982 registration must be a mistake, perhaps it was on a personalized number plate?

Everyone locally knew that car, and although his Grandad loved it, he would often take the bus, or walk to save racking up the miles.

Sadly, ill health forced him to sell it, and nothing exciting was to fill its space.

Growing up, Nathan was very much influenced by custom and modified car culture, so only really had eyes for those vehicles on the streets. In his local area at least, not much stood out.

If you'd like to find out more about Nathan's work encouraging car enthusiasts to speak to each other about mental health, then check him out on instagram here.

  • Paul Medhurst: Grandads Aston Martin, Dad's Austin Princess, Ford Cortina, Mum's Beetle, Mini Cooper and a ride in a 964 S6E7
    Jun 24 2025

    Send us a text

We're joined this week by Paul Medhurst, the man behind VW workshop, classic car showroom and now destination coffee shop Type 2 Detectives.

Paul recalls telling people his Grandad used to drive an Aston Martin - however, his Mum corrected him one day when she overheard him telling some friends... It was actually an Austin Maxi!

His Dad had an Austin Princess, then a Ford Cortina which they drove to the South of France. His Mum had a VW Beetle, and later a Mini Cooper, which his Dad scored from the neighbour, after a domestic argument over a brand new VW Campervan meant it had to go!

Paul also records a speedy trip around the block in a Porsche 964 with a mate from school... a car which later inspired him to buy his own 964.

We hope you enjoy this episode.

  • Adrian Brannan: My Dad had a Chrysler Horizon, yellow Escort Mk3, Ford Sierra and why I now own all three! S6E6
    Jun 10 2025

    Send us a text

We're joined by Adrian Brannan, an automotive photographer from Glasgow.

He learnt his craft following his father around (who was a wedding photographer) and taking photos of the family cars, and anything interesting he saw on the street.

His Dad learnt to drive late, so Adrian remembers him learning, and also his first car... an orange Chrysler Horizon. It was an early one, and later re-badged as a Talbot. It was replaced by a yellow Mk3 Ford Escort, which wasn't much better... in fact Adrian recalls it letting in water when it rained!

Their Ford Sierra Sapphire was a huge step up in build quality and comfort, and whilst it wasn't a range topper (with rear armrest) it put the others to shame, and proved to be the perfect muse for Adrian to practice his photography on.

Today, Adrian is reliving these mediocre motoring experiences himself, as he's tracked down one of only a few exisiting Chrysler Horizons, in orange... He's added a little twist, lowering it on banded steel wheels.

He's also sourced a yellow Mk3 Escort 5 door, as per his childhood chariot, and rounded the whole thing off with a Sierra Sapphire... Cosworth (well its almost the same!) In fact Adrian is into double digits with his 80s, 90s and early noughties car collection.. and his daily driver is a Ford Orion he won in a retro car raffle!

We hope you enjoy this episode.

  • Bonus Episode: Jonny Smith on lawn mowers and car washing
    Jun 3 2025

    Send us a text

We know you enjoyed the episode with Jonny Smith... so here's a little conversation we kept back for you to enjoy all about lawn mowers and car washing.

Jonny's first job was mowing lawns for neighbours, and as it happens, that is what Jon does for a day job too.

It's silly, its a little rough around the edges, but we hope you enjoy it!

Normal service resumes next week with another full episode.

  • Robbie Knox: A mystery Citroen, a stolen Renault, Clown Cars, Marketing the Circus, Butlins and always leaving early. S6E5
    May 27 2025

    Send us a text

Our latest guest is the one and only Robbie Knox! If you’re familiar with @meggarobbie you probably first saw him on cult football morning show Soccer AM, but if you missed the 90s/00s he can now be found trading as an influencer extraordinaire.

Robbie was kind enough to spare us an hour or so as we attempted to pick his brains on all things cars and car nostalgia. Naturally this did veer away from cars rather a lot, including why Butlins is like Center Parcs without the trees. Circus marketing campaigns. And who has the hardest water in their area, Jon or Robbie?

  • Elliot Mitchell: My Dad was a previous guest (S2E8). Alfa Romeo, BMW, Porsche 356, Range Rover, XR3i Cabriolet S6E4
    May 13 2025

    Send us a text

A first for our podcast, an intergenerational episode, as we welcome Elliot Mitchell, who came to us after hearing his Dad on Season 2 Episode 8.

We had a great time on that one, and remained in contact with the family afterwards as Rob is a personal friend, so it made sense to hear what his eldest son had to say about his memories of cars growing up.

Some lovely tales of Grandparents, travelling to and from his Dad's after growing up living with his Mum - something Andy can relate closely too.

We hope you enjoy this one, and please do go and check out Rob's episode (S2E8) it's one of our most listened too!

  • Jonny Smith: Hillman Avenger, Mad-Maxi, Austin Allegro, Montego, Cavalier, New cars should be bright! S6E3
    Apr 29 2025

    Send us a text

It was a real pleasure to have Motoring Journalist, TV and You Tuber Jonny Smith join us for a full fat chat about cars of yesteryear.

His story starts with a couple of British classics. A Harvest Gold Austin Allegro belonging to his Grandparents, and a Hillman Avenger that his parents owned from 1979 to the late nineties, perhaps even beyond the millennium!

We take in an Austin Maxi with a ‘drink driver facelift’ which his Dad repaired overnight with piano wire, ready for work the next day.

There’s a Vauxhall Carlton, an honourable mention for the Mk2 Vauxhall Cavalier Estate (apparently built in Australia by Holden).

We also speak about a white Austin Rover Montego estate, why used car dealers have bunting, and more puzzlingly always leave the boot of a car open, when on display.

We finish things up with a chat about gifting books to schools, and incentivising car manufacturers painting their cars bright colours rather than ‘soviet grey’ or appliance white.

It goes without saying we recommend you take a listen to the wonderful Smith and Sniff Podcast, and check out The Late Brake Show on You Tube.
