  • S08E19 – Thando Nkonyana | Self – crticism | Overcoming escapism | Destructive habits | Taking responsibility | Personal growth |
    May 21 2025

Thando Nkonyana, offers a deep, personal reflection on overcoming destructive habits like substance abuse and the internal struggle against complacency. He emphasizes that change comes through conscious decision-making and facing challenges with a sober mind, rather than resorting to escapism.

The core message revolves around taking personal responsibility for one's life and aspirations, understanding that progress is often invisible and requiresperseverance, and finding inspiration in self-reflection and past achievements to continue building a better future.

"It's easy to fall into that trap, man. That cycle of 'I deserve this, I've earned this' which quickly spirals into 'I need this, I can't function without this.' And that 'this' could be anything, you know? Booze, pills, Netflix binges... whatever numbs the pain, whatever silences the voice that's telling you you could be doing more, being better.

But the truth is, facing that voice, feeling that discomfort, that's where the growth happens. That's where the real work begins. It's not comfortable. It's definitely not easy. There are days when I want to just curl up and forget the whole damn thing. But then I remember... I remember who I used to be, and more importantly, who I want to be.

And that remembering, that's the key, innit? Because we all have victories in our past, moments where we pushed through, where we overcame something. Maybe it was acing that exam, landing that job, or just finally telling someone how we really felt. Those moments, they're proof that we're capable of more than we think.

So when the urge to escape hits, I try to tap into that. I try toremember that feeling of accomplishment, that feeling of strength. And I remind myself that the future I want, the life I dream of, it's not gonna magically appear. It's gonna take work.

It's gonna take conscious choices, day in and day out. And it's gonna take facing the discomfort head-on, sober, with my eyes wide open. It’s about being real with yourself, man. No more bullshit."
