Acerca de esta escucha
In this Episode, I shared my experiences with metal detectors at security checkpoints, including at airports, government buildings, hospitals, and even amusement parks.
There are basically 3 types of metal detectors
- Wands, which detect metal
- Walk-Through Metal Detectors, which detect metal
- Full Body Scanners, which detect metal and non-metal items
Each of these can be of different quality and have settings such that there are degrees of detection and effectiveness. Other than at airports, my hips rarely trigger any alarm or warrant further screening.
Early on with my hips, I was more concerned about the airport screenings and causing a scene with security. When I started travelling after surgery, I tried using the Walk-Through Metal Detectors at airports, but the alarm typically sounded. After my explanation, I was then directed to either go through the Full Body Scanner or have a physical pat-down.
Over time, I bypassed the Walk-Through Metal Detector and I learned to simply mention that I have metal without the need to explain the hip implants. The Full Body Scanner or the hand pat-down at the airport are both viable options to get through security. When I get directed to a Full Body Scanner machine, I routinely politely decline and opt for the hands-on screening of a Transportation Security Officer. I have altered my preferred methods at various times in the past 10 years.
Surgical implants are relatively common and odds are that the security personnel will be able to discreetly get you screened and on to your destination in a reasonable about of time.
