This week is Alcohol Awareness Week (July 7th to 13th). The theme for the week is “Alcohol and Work”. Data from the Drinkaware Barometer 2024 reveals that over 1 in 4 Irish adults (26%) report drinking for conformity reasons—to fit in, be liked, or avoid feeling left out. This figure more than doubles for the youngest adults, with 53% of 18–24-year-olds and 42% of 25-34 year-olds citing conformity as a reason for drinking in the past 30 days. Noel Considine, Former Clare goalkeeper, who won an All Ireland in 1997 and was hospitalised nine times due to drinking before he had turned 21 and Dr. Eva Devaney from Healthy UL/Substance Use & Gambling.
