  • Our Identity in Christ - Adoption and Inheritance
    Jun 18 2025

Welcome to episode 205 of Grasp the Bible. In this episode, we conclude our three-week series on our identity in Christ. Today, we explore the concepts of adoption and inheritance.

    Key takeaways:

    • God doesn't just pardon us from our sins; He welcomes us into His family, with all the rights, privileges, and inheritance that come with being His children.
    • Our adoption required an enormous price—God "sent his Son" to "redeem" us.
    • There's a change in status from "slave" to "child."
    • We receive the Spirit of God's Son—the Holy Spirit—who confirms our adoption.
    • Our adoption makes us heirs—we have an inheritance waiting for us.
    • Our trials aren't punishment for wayward children; they're training for beloved children whom God is preparing for an eternal weight of glory.
    • What exactly is our inheritance? It includes everything Christ inherits.

    Quotable:

    • Our status as God's children is secure—not because of our performance, but because of His promise.

    Application:

    • How should this identity as adopted children shape our daily lives?
    • First, it should transform how we approach God.
    • Second, our identity as God's children should shape how we view suffering and discipline.
    • Third, our adoption should ignite anticipation for our inheritance.
    • Live from this identity.
    • When you pray, approach God as your loving Father, not a distant deity.
    • When you face challenges, remember you're being trained as a beloved child, not punished as an unwelcome intruder.
    • When the future seems uncertain, recall the glorious inheritance that awaits you.

  • Our Identity in Christ - A New Creation
    Jun 11 2025

Welcome to episode 204 of Grasp the Bible. In this episode, we continue our three-week series on our identity in Christ. Today, we explore the realities of our being a new creation, based on 2 Corinthians 5:17.

    Key takeaways:

    • When you come to faith in Christ, you don't just become a slightly improved version of your old self—you become a fundamentally different kind of being.
    • We died with Christ, were buried with Christ, and were raised with Christ. This isn't something we're striving to accomplish; it's something that has already happened spiritually when we placed our faith in Jesus.
    • Our progress in holiness is motivated by both who we already are and who we will ultimately become.

    Quotable:

    • Becoming a new creation is not rehabilitation; it's resurrection.

    Application:

    • Your old self is dead. That's a fact. Now live accordingly.  This is where many Christians get stuck. We look at our ongoing struggles and conclude, "Well, I must not really be a new creation yet. Maybe when I finally overcome this sin, then I'll be transformed." But this gets the order exactly backward. We don't behave our way into a new identity; we believe our way into new behavior.
    • So, how do we begin to live in light of our new creation reality? Let me suggest three practical steps:
    • First, know the truth. Spend time studying what Scripture says about your new identity in Christ.
    • Second, replace lies with truth. Identify the false narratives you've believed about yourself.
    • Third, practice new creation habits. Consciously give God access to your time, your thoughts, your relationships, and your resources.

  • Our Identity in Christ - From Broken to Beloved
    Jun 3 2025

Welcome to episode 203 of Grasp the Bible. In this episode, we begin a three-week series on our identity in Christ. Today, we explore what it means to go from broken to beloved.

    Key takeaways:

    • To understand who we are, we must first understand how God sees us.
    • Before we cleaned up our act, before we got our lives together, while we were still defined by our brokenness—that's when Christ died for us.
    • Many of us exhaust ourselves trying to earn what God has already freely given. We strive for approval, validation, and worth, unaware that in Christ, these are already ours.
    • The battlefield for identity is often in our thoughts.

    Quotable:

    • Our identity is not earned but bestowed.

    Application:

    • So how do we begin to live from this new identity rather than constantly striving to achieve it?
    • First, we must consistently renew our minds with God's truth.
    • Second, we need to practice "identity statements" based on Scripture.
    • Third, we must find community that reinforces our true identity.
