  • Circle of Animals by Sadie Hoagland | GSMC Book Review Podcast
    May 21 2025
Sarah speaks with author Sadie Hoagland about her haunting and timely novel, Circle of Animals. Blending literary fiction with emotional depth and cultural insight, Hoagland's latest work explores generational trauma, the legacy of silence, and the complex journey toward healing and self-discovery.

Circle of Animals follows Sky Richard, a woman reeling from the trauma of a workplace assault just as her free-spirited mother, Edi, disappears without a trace. As Sky begins the search for her mother, her journey leads to unexpected places—a long-lost grandmother, a commune from her mother's past, and the buried truths of a matrilineal history marked by silence and survival.

Through Sky’s story, Hoagland examines how unresolved pain and unspoken violence echo across generations, often isolating the very women who need each other most. The novel thoughtfully incorporates themes from ancient mythology, the zodiac, and the countercultural movements of California’s past, while addressing urgent contemporary conversations around gender, trauma, and reclaiming personal agency.

Sarah and Sadie Hoagland discuss the novel’s layered characters, the inspiration behind its mythological elements, and the emotional intensity involved in writing about inherited trauma. Listeners will gain insight into Hoagland’s writing process and the thematic importance of voice—both lost and reclaimed.

Tune in to this powerful conversation that highlights the resilience of women and the importance of confronting the past to move forward.

  • The Anatomy of Exile by Zeeva Bukai | GSMC Book Review Podcast
    May 13 2025
Sarah speaks with author Zeeva Bukai about her powerful debut novel, The Anatomy of Exile. A richly layered family saga, Bukai’s novel tells the story of the Abadis—a Jewish Arab family shattered by loss, identity conflict, and generational trauma.

The novel begins in the aftermath of a tragedy during the 1967 Six Day War, when a secret love affair between a Palestinian poet and a Jewish woman ends in death. As grief and cultural tension engulf the family, Tamar and her husband Salim—a man torn between his Arab and Jewish heritage—make the difficult decision to relocate their family to the United States. But the promise of a fresh start quickly unravels as old divisions resurface in a new land.

When a Palestinian family moves into the apartment upstairs, Tamar is forced to confront her fears, her past, and her deep-rooted biases—especially as her daughter falls for the Palestinian son. In trying to protect her family, Tamar risks pushing them further away. Zeeva Bukai's novel is a poignant exploration of identity, exile, forbidden love, and the high emotional stakes of holding onto family in an ever-changing world.

Sarah and Zeeva discuss the themes of cross-cultural love, what it means to straddle multiple identities, and how historical trauma can echo through generations. Bukai also shares insights into her creative process, the personal inspiration behind the novel, and how fiction can spark vital conversations about empathy, legacy, and belonging.

Whether you're interested in intergenerational stories, Jewish and Middle Eastern history, or complex characters navigating love and loss, this conversation is one you won’t want to miss.

  • Circle of Peace by Sophia Kouidou-Giles | GSMC Book Review Podcast
    May 6 2025
Sarah speaks with author Sophia Kouidou-Giles about her stunning new novel Circle of Peace, a powerful retelling of Greek mythology that centers the oft-overlooked goddess Perse—wife of Helios and mother of Circe. Through rich storytelling and emotional depth, Kouidou-Giles breathes new life into ancient myth, giving voice to a character long overshadowed by more well-known figures.

Circle of Peace begins with a bold request: Perse asks Helios for a hall of her own in return for helping his disgraced sister, Selene, after she angers Zeus with a forbidden love. But triumph quickly gives way to tragedy when Phaethon, Helios’s impulsive son, hijacks his father's chariot and sets the world ablaze—resulting in his untimely death by Zeus’s thunderbolt.

As grief floods the House of Helios and war breaks out across the land, Perse rises from the ashes of sorrow with remarkable strength. With her keen insight and fierce resolve, she becomes a beacon of hope, advocating for peace while the world teeters on the brink of destruction.

In her conversation with Sarah, Kouidou-Giles shares what inspired her to reimagine Perse’s story, how she approached the emotional resonance of myth, and why ancient stories continue to offer timeless reflections on power, identity, and healing.

Whether you're a fan of Greek mythology, feminist retellings, or stories that explore resilience through the lens of tragedy, this episode is a must-listen.

Don’t miss this engaging interview that explores the heart of myth and the enduring strength of women who refuse to be silenced.
