  • Hydrogen and offshore wind: highs and lows, mostly lows
    May 22 2025

In this episode, the team analyses the prominent hydrogen and offshore wind developments in the first half of May. We go over the grant award under European Commission's second hydrogen bank auction which also included a provision for the use of hydrogen derivative as bunker fuel, a first under this mechanism.

In not so positive news for the sector, hydrogen refuelling stations operator Hynion's Swedish subsidiary filed for bankruptcy citing challenging market conditions.

Staying in the region, the team breaks down the future of the offshore wind sector in Sweden and the potential for the re-launched floating offshore wind tender in Norway.

We also go over the reasons behind Netherlands' decision to reduce the target capacity for its upcoming offshore wind tender and round off the discussion with the Equinor's offshore wind woes in the US.

  • Targets vs Reality: Shaping tomorrow’s energy markets
    May 16 2025

In this episode, the team breaks down a turbulent few weeks for clean energy development. From Orsted pulling the plug on supply chain contracts for Hornsea 4, to Statkraft’s suspension of new green hydrogen developments. Yet Spain bucks the trend, doubling down with ambitious targets. We assess whether that ambition can turn into delivery.

We also take a deep dive into the UK’s energy market reform. Zonal pricing remains one of REMA’s most contentious proposals. We explore lessons from Sweden and Norway, the industrial stakes, and what the transition could mean for the grid, consumers, and developers alike.

Also in the episode, updates on the Clean Industry Bonus and offshore wind support, a £1.35bn grid investment from Scottish Power, and a look at the UK’s steel crisis and the path to green steel.

  • What happened to Spain's grid?
    May 2 2025

This week, we unpack a dramatic week for the Iberian energy system. On 28 April, Spain, Portugal, and parts of southern France were plunged into darkness by a massive grid failure, affecting millions of people. We investigate what went wrong.

We then turn to Spain’s hydrogen sector, where a new offshore pilot project and a national support scheme suggest the momentum for renewable hydrogen is returning. We also unpack updates from Germany’s solar and hydrogen sectors, with auction results and new grants on the way.

Finally, we examine the implications of Germany’s new CDU-led coalition, set to take office under Friedrich Merz. What will this mean for the country’s climate targets, hydrogen priorities, and controversial policies on nuclear and heating? Will the new government reset Germany’s energy diplomacy on the European stage?

Plus: Insight on what to expect at the Financing European Renewables Summit in Madrid this June.

  • Hype and hard truths: Energy storage and hydrogen in Europe
    Apr 4 2025

In this episode, we cover the latest developments in hydrogen, energy storage, and grid infrastructure across the UK and Europe.

We begin with a focus on hydrogen, examining new project acquisitions, financial restructuring efforts, and updates from the UK government's consultations.

We then reflect on key takeaways from our recent Energy Storage Summit, where industry participants debated the effectiveness of tender-led versus merchant market models. Drawing on comparisons between the UK, Germany, and Italy, we explore how different markets are attracting investment and securing long-term revenues for battery storage projects.

Finally, we examine the state of the UK’s grid infrastructure, including recent planning approvals, new funding mechanisms, and regulatory reforms.

  • Major resets and a new offshore manufacturing strategy
    Mar 7 2025

This week we break down bp's strategic pivot away from renewables, as the energy major scales back green investments in favour of oil and gas. What does this mean for the energy transition and the wider renewables market?

We examine the UK's evolving Contracts for Difference scheme, ahead of the launch of Allocation Round 7. We also take a closer look at the new Clean Industry Bonus—designed to boost UK manufacturing—and whether it provides real value for offshore wind developers or just adds more complexity.

Plus, major deals in the energy sector, including Brookfield's acquisition of National Grid's US renewables platform, Greenscale's new data centre development in Northern Ireland, and a deep dive into London's ambitious £1 billion district heating project that could transform Westminster's energy infrastructure.
