ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
On Ascension Day, we celebrate that Jesus has not left us alone. He promises to be with us! And today on Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the reality of it . On Pentecost, Jesus fulfilled his promise to send the "Advocate," a title for the Holy Spirit. And Jesus didn't just send the Spirit to keep us company. This Advocate gives us spiritual power to participate in Christ's saving work He continues to harvest souls into his kingdom. How? He comes to make his home in our hearts, through his powerful, Spirit-driven Word that proclaims salvation for the sinner. That's how Jesus deals with us - through his Word. And that's how Jesus carries on his victory march of the gospel. We are not left alone or missing out. God gives birth to the Church to carry his Word into the world.

ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
The world would not say that the path to the glory we seek is to walk towards a cross. The world would say it’s whatever path is shortest and easiest. That’s the path we would want! To walk the path that the Savior puts us on, though, is one where the cross comes before the crown. While that might be out of step with the world, the determination to walk the path starts with our Savior, not with us. And his determination to walk his path to his cross is the guarantee that ours will lead to the same place: it ends with a crown far better and a glory far superior to anything this world can offer.

Christians might often be eager to put together their own resumé of how impressive they are. Lineage. Obedience. A righteousness of our own. But that’s all worthless. Faith teaches us that what we originally thought was a treasure – our works – is trash. And the only event that can cause that reversal is the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. That’s where we learn to know Christ, and that knowledge is better than any other. And that knowledge gives joy – a joy that has its basis in Christ. His resurrection proves that the sacrifice he offered for us was perfect and capable of delivering righteousness to us. That’s reason to
rejoice in the Lord!

ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
It is a joy for the Christian to hear the words “Go do good works!” It’s not a
joy because they are the cause of eternal life – that has already been
provided by God in Christ. It is a joy because good works are an inevitable
component of the life of one who is headed towards eternal salvation. Christ has secured our eternity, and we trust it because of the miracle of saving faith the Spirit has worked in us. And now that same God works in us to live and to act according to his good purpose. Just as salvation is the work of God, so is the perseverance of our faith to the end. We pray, “Lord, continue to do this in my life according to your Word!”

Jesus is our King, but he came humbly to save us. Though he is true God, he
became a man. Though he is all powerful, he became a servant. Though he is immortal and eternal, he died. He not only laid aside his glory, but he also took our shame on him. Yet, in this great humility, he won the peace of forgiveness for us, and earned for himself the name that he had been given, the name that is above every name: Jesus. And he earns for us a credential that expresses itself in emptying ourselves from a life of selfishness and conceit, and he fills us with the tenderness and compassion of Jesus to
value others above ourselves.

ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
“To live is Christ and to die is gain.” You and I would likely be quick to admit that life here on a sinful earth can be nowhere near as good as life in the perfection of heaven. Yet, between the two, Paul says “I can’t choose” even though he knows the one is better by far. That’s because Paul knew that if he continued living, he would have more fruitful labor ahead of him to proclaim Christ to more people. If he died, he would be ushered to Jesus’ side because of Jesus’ resurrection. Paul was torn between two wonderful options, and so are we. We know that Christ will be exalted in our life, or in our death! The name of Christ be praised!

Job had health, wealth, a beautiful family, and the respect of his peers. But God allowed Satan to take it all away from him. What happens to our resurrection joy when calamity like that strikes to the heart of our lives? Just ask Job. In the midst of his pain, agony, and suffering, as he sat in a pile of ashes, he boldly proclaimed "I know that my Redeemer lives!" And that means his best days were ahead of him. That means that he will live too. That means that no matter what we face in our lives here on earth - whether we wake up on Easter morning or on the darkest of days or anything in-between, with Job we can say "I know!" And that changes everything!

While Jesus hung on the cross, darkness reigned. Covered with the sins of the world, and deemed the sinner of sinners by his Father, Jesus experience the very agonies of hell. He willingly endured that pain, beyond anything we could ever imagine, because he was committed to completing the task the Father gave him: to rescue sinners from the punishment we deserved. God bless our meditation on Jesus' suffering and death in our place for our benefit!
